The Adult RowStart course is for people with no or very limited rowing experience. The aim of the course is to give people an introduction into the sport, allow them to develop their skills, and see if they enjoy the sport of rowing.
The club runs a 6-week rowstart course with one session at the same time each week. During the summer these are held in the evening at 6.30pm, and will move to the weekend later in the year when it’s dark in the evenings (end of September to May). They last approximately 75 minutes. While the risk of capsizing a boat is low (the boats used are quite stable) it does occasionally occur, so participants in the course should be able to swim fully clothed.
At the end of RowStart we hope that participant will be competent enough to join the Development Squad, if you wish to consider the sport at a more competitive level. Time as part of the Development Squad can vary but after improving your skills you will join one of the Race Squads which train on Saturdays and Sundays in the winter and summer, and also evenings in the summer. The racing squads are split into juniors, mens, womens and masters (although there is no rule regarding ages it’s aimed at rowers in their 40’s and 50’s).
For those people who would rather use the sport as a means of keeping fit and do not wish to compete at this stage, there is the opportunity to join the Recreational squad which goes out on Sunday mornings and selected evenings during the summer to row.
The cost of the RowStart course is (at time of writing – August 2017) £72, which is payable when the participant starts the course. Should at the end of the course the participant wish to continue the adult membership cost is £21 per month.
